The work of the ICDP is backed by a geographically diverse group of countries from all regions of the world that are committed to the abolitionist cause on a global and regional scale. It first met on 28 September 2010 in Madrid to outline the ways of support it may offer to the ICDP.
The Support Group is composed by the following countries: Algeria, Argentine, Dominican Republic, France, Italy, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Mongolia, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Togo and Turkey.
The Support Group will carry out its functions under the coordination of a rotating Presidency of one year. Spain holds the first Presidency until September/October 2011. The next Presidency will be assumed by Switzerland. Switzerland holds the second Presidency until October 2012. The next Presidency will be assumed by Norway.
